One Year On
It was exactly one year ago that I was able to cover my first Gateshead FC match against Woking when Gateshead won 2-1. It was the start of my love for sports photography and it was also the start of a lot of new lessons.
I know that I still have a lot of learning to do but at least I know that my photos have improved since that first game, well there had to be an improvement. It’s also good to know that if I have any questions that I am able to ask Gateshead’s professional photographer, Martin Avery.
Yesterdays match against Luton Town was indeed a very different one, the result was 0-0 as both teams played well but Gateshead was just ahead as the better team. The other difference was the weather, I remember that the game against Woking was quite sunny but yesterday was heavy rain down pour. Most people that had watched Newcastle United beating Chelsea earlier would have seen a bit of rain coming down but that was nothing compared to the amount of rain during the Gateshead match.
The first half was not bad until about the 35th minute and the rain started lightly then at half time it got heavier. In fact some of the subs didn’t even get to the pitch for their warm ups as it was so heavy. It was at that point I made arrangements to go into the East Stand near where the away fans were located. In the end I was glad of this as I also got to think that if I was in there on a decent sunny day with my current lens then I could very possibly cover the full pitch.
I did miss one opportunity that showed just how bad the weather had been and it was near the end when James Curtis had slip along the ground and it looked more like he was on flat water slide.
What’s next? Well no matter what we do in life there is something that we could class as being a game changer. For me and my photography it has to be new equipment. I already have a Peli 1510 case, which has definitely been a great purchase as it not only keeps lenses that are not being used dry but also acts as a seat and can support a lot of weight (trust me on that).
Next on my ‘shopping list’ is a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens, luckily at the moment the prices are coming down and I do have a ‘payment plan’ set up (with my Mam) so that I will be able to get the lens within the next week.
